Stages of Gum Disease
Periodontal disease (gum disease) is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss. Finding effective ways to improve your gum health can minimize your risks of developing periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an infection of the gum tissue, which can lead to complex dental issues. The earliest stage of gum disease is gingivitis. During gingivitis, the gums become red, puffy, and bleed easily. In most cases, gingivitis is reversible under the care experienced dentist.
When left untreated, gingivitis can progress into a more aggressive form of gum disease called periodontitis. Periodontitis occurs when plaque forms below the gum line causing inflammation in the gum tissue. Over time, the gums, bone, and connective tissue may begin to break down. The gums recede from the teeth causing deep pockets to form. The end result of periodontitis is shifting teeth and eventually tooth loss.
Improve Your Gum Health
Gum disease is the result of plaque buildup between the teeth and gums. When gum disease is left untreated, the connective tissue and bone holding the teeth together may begin to break down. In advanced cases, gum disease can lead to tooth loss.
Gum disease is preventable. We encourage patients to follow these key tips to minimize their risk of gum disease.
- Brush your teeth. Brush your teeth are least twice a day to remove debris, bacteria, and plaque from the teeth and gums. Keeping the teeth clean can reduce your risk of plaque buildup.
- Don’t forget to floss. Flossing at least once a day can help remove debris, bacteria, and food particles that may be hiding between the teeth.
- Use mouthwash. Try to incorporate mouthwash into your oral hygiene routine. Mouthwash can help reduce plaque and remove any debris left over from your brushing and flossing routine.
- Visit your dentist. Visit Lost Mountain Dental at least twice a year for preventive care exam. During preventive care exams, Dr. Mulkey and Dr. Hildreth can thoroughly examine the teeth and gums for any signs of gum disease. If gum disease is diagnosed, we can create a custom designed treatment plan that addresses all your dentistry needs.
